When you launch a new design or feature, returning users notice something has changed. That awareness — the novelty — can temporarily boost clicks, sign-ups, or other target metrics simply because the experience feels different, not because it's genuinely better. This is the novelty effect.
The result is an inflated win that evaporates after users grow accustomed to the new experience.
How to Recognize It
Novelty effect typically shows a characteristic pattern in time-series data:
- The variant shows a strong lift in the first few days
- Performance gradually declines toward the control level
- After 1–2 weeks, the gap narrows or disappears
If you're seeing this shape in your daily conversion rate charts, novelty effect is a likely explanation.
Who Is Affected
Novelty effect only impacts returning users — visitors who have already seen your control experience. New users have no baseline to compare against, so they don't experience "novelty."
This means novelty effect is most pronounced on:
- High-return-rate products (SaaS dashboards, e-commerce with frequent buyers)
- Changes to persistent UI elements (navigation, search bars, checkout flows)
- Sites where a large portion of test traffic is returning visitors
How to Mitigate It
- Extend test runtime — Run for at least 2–3 full weeks so the initial spike washes out of the data
- Segment by new vs. returning users — Analyze the metric separately for each group. If new users show a similar lift to returning users, the effect is more likely real
- Use a holdout group — Maintain a small holdout of users who never see the variant, giving you a long-term baseline for comparison
- Check weekly cohorts — If lift was strong in week 1 and near zero in weeks 2–3, be skeptical of the overall result
The Opposite: Familiarity Bias
Occasionally, users resist the new experience — clicking back to familiar patterns. This can suppress a real improvement in the short term. Both novelty effect and familiarity bias argue for longer test runtimes before declaring a winner.
